World Premier North Port Symphony Concerto
Featured guests: Rex Willis, composer of "Concerto for Guitar"
with soloist Thomas Koch
The North Port Symphony's final concert of the year will feature the World Premiere of Rex Willis' "Concerto for Guitar" with featured Soloist, Thomas Koch, performing a new work commissioned by Maestro von Dassow for the North Port Symphony. It is a Latin-influenced impressionistic three-movement piece written by one of the region's premiere composers, Rex Willis. Mr. von Dassow said recently, "I have worked on recording two of Rex's scores for 'Southernmost Point' and 'Ghosts of Ybor,' indie films that garnered great attention at national festivals for their music, and have had the privilege of premiering his 'Rhapsody' for Guitar and Cello, written a few years ago by Rex for the two of us. His brand of American music is infused with the Blues, Latin beats, Impressionism, a tinge of Aaron Copeland's expansive sparseness, and a sense of humor leavening it all like Jimmy Buffet's shaker of salt in Margaritaville. He and his friend and colleague, guitarist Thomas Koch, have brought new levels of respect to themselves around the world for their work as both composers and guitarists through Rex's large catalog of frequently performed and published works, the association Guitar Sarasota, and frequent tours of Europe. It's a thrill to bring a new piece to the world in North Port with such talent, skill, and commitment working together so well. I can't wait!"
